The first player to create five consecutive pieces—horizontally, vertically, or diagonally—wins immediately. Basic Controls & Rules
Click any empty square to place your piece. Players alternate turns automatically. Five in a row (in any direction) wins the game. In standard Gomoku, opening restrictions may apply: the first player cannot form three consecutive pieces in the opening moves. The game ends when one player completes five in a row or the board fills completely.
Tips for Beginners
- Control the center: The middle squares offer more directional flexibility. A piece in the center can contribute to four different winning lines (horizontal, vertical, two diagonals).
- Create two-way threats: Develop positions where you're one move away from winning in two different directions. Your opponent cannot block both in a single turn.
- Recognize threats early: If your opponent has three in a row with two open ends, they win on their next turn. Block immediately or create a stronger counter-threat.
- Use edges strategically: While the center is powerful, edges create devastating patterns since pieces outside the board don't break threat lines.
- Plan multiple moves ahead: Consider where you place pieces for immediate threats and future winning combinations.
Advanced Strategies
- Master opening patterns: Classic opening sequences like diagonal starts or center-aligned pieces create multiple threat opportunities on the second move.
- Build threat chains: Develop positions where blocking one threat creates another. Force opponents into reactive defense while you maintain initiative.
- Control tempo with fours: A four-in-a-row position with at least one open end forces your opponent to block. Use this to control the game flow.
- Destroy emerging patterns: Recognize when your opponent has a potential five-in-a-row formation two moves away and destroy it before completion.
